Abstract

The question of reading modes brought about by the intertwining of literature and new technologies is inseparably linked with contemporary capitalism: platform capitalism, surveillance capitalism, algorithmic governance, and creation based on the repetition of patterns and behaviors. Within this framework, we will approach several methodological debates—navigating between close reading and distant reading, and proposing alternative frameworks such as Kozak’s close–distant–collaborative–localized reading or the post-philology proposed by Link—through the analysis of both “analog” poems and pieces of so-called “digital literature” by contemporary Latin American authors. This exploration highlights the performative particularity of reading in digital media, stemming from eye–hand coordination, since the act of touching (clicks, scrolling) is the way of directing the gaze. We will attempt to show that, even in literary productions that require software as a condition of existence and new methodological approaches, literary potential works by returning the subject to their human, material, and historical condition. Literature, beyond its mediums, problematizes its own materiality, singularizes perception, and generates a "resistance" or a deviation that occurs in the reader’s body..
