Abstract
Pylkkänen's (2008) theory explains how non-core arguments are introduced into syntactic structures. Concerning the introduction of non-core datives, Pylkkänen proposes the existence of an applicative functional head (ApplP), which, depending on where it merges in the syntactic structure, could be classified as low or high. Regarding low ApplPs, Pylkkänen notes that they are restricted to non-stative verbs with internal arguments. However, the Spanish data show that this is a more complex issue, at least in this language (Cuervo, 2003; Pujalte, 2009). Firstly, not every transitive eventive verb allows the addition of an applicative phrase. Secondly, not all stative verbs are incompatible with non-core indirect objects. These facts could pose a problem, as they would imply the need to modify the theory. We will show, however, that stative verbs do not constitute a counterexample and we will explore a reformulation that maintains the transitivity requirement, but extends the restriction on verbal semantics to all telic predicates, not just statives.
